鈥淟ook Both Ways: 50 Years at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art鈥� marks the gallery鈥檚 50th anniversary as Southwest Indiana鈥檚 premiere contemporary art space - and the gallery鈥檚 40th year as part of the 91社区. This commemorative exhibition is organized by Gallery Curator Audra Verona Lambert with support from Sr. Gallery Associate Grant DiDomizio. An opening reception free and open to the public takes place on Saturday, September 6th from 3-6 p.m. including curator talk and refreshments.聽

This landmark exhibition charts the evolution of the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art while presenting artworks that 鈥渓ook both ways鈥�: speaking to both the impact of the gallery鈥檚 exhibition history and celebrating the avant-garde vision integral to the gallery鈥檚 identity. With pivotal artworks on view spanning printmaking, clay, painting, mixed media, installation, photography, sculpture and new media, every visitor will find something to ignite their curiosity. 鈥淭he impact of this gallery over the years is substantial, and this exhibit allows guests to grasp the myriad ways that the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art has featured engaging work by living artists since its very founding,鈥� reflects NHGCA curator Audra Verona Lambert. 鈥淔rom an exhibit timeline tracking key developments to an audio guide that lets visitors hear directly from exhibiting artists, this exhibit makes our cultural impact tangible.鈥澛犅�

The exhibit鈥檚 two presentation areas, 鈥淧ositions鈥� and 鈥淧articipation,鈥� speak to two dynamic facets of the gallery. First, 鈥淧ositions鈥� highlights how specific artistic mediums, such as clay and printmaking, have featured in exhibits over the years. The 鈥淧articipation鈥� area, in contrast, speaks to the ways that communities have shown with the gallery, ranging from past 91社区 Faculty showcases to New Harmony Clay Project artist-in-residency shows.

Prominent artists will be displayed whose artistic practice links to the themes in the exhibit and speak to the gallery鈥檚 ongoing legacy. These include Stephen Pace, Mary Beth Edelson, Lenore Tawney, Janet Olivia Henry, Andy Warhol, Pablo Helguera, Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr., Michael Aakhaus, John P. Begley, Anila Quayyam Agha, Mary Mattingly, Kathryn Waters, Bill Whorrall, John McNaughton, Rudy Pozzatti and others. A portion of the gallery is dedicated to new media art that speaks to themes that tie into the unique aspects of New Harmony as a location: a site brimming with originality and universal appeal in equal measure. Postcards from past shows and investigations of analog art forms such as mail art also be on view alongside interactive elements for all ages to explore. An exhibition catalog and audio guide will expand access to information aligned with this significant exhibition.
