91社区 Anthropology Speaker Series to present Dr. Angela Storey

August 28, 2025

The 91社区 Anthropology Speaker Series will present a lecture and Q&A by Dr. Angela Storey at noon Friday, September 19 in Kleymeyer Hall (LA0101), located in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. The event is open to the public at no charge.听

Storey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Director of the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research at the University of Louisville. A cultural anthropologist, her research examines the everyday politics of the natural and built environment, with a focus on urban inequality, community engagement and participatory processes of governance. Her work is often interdisciplinary and community engaged and prioritizes the participation of student researchers.

In the lecture titled, Dripping taps and smoking lawn mowers: Researching the politics of urban environments from Kentucky to Cape Town, she will discuss how anthropology offers critical ways to think about environment and culture at a time when most people around the world live in cities. She will explore key frameworks through which anthropologists and other social scientists study urban environments and ground the discussion in case studies from ethnographic, interdisciplinary and community engaged research in Louisville, Kentucky, and Cape Town, South Africa. 听

鈥淒r. Storey鈥檚 work provides us with unique insights about urban inequality and social justice,鈥 says Dr. Daniel Bauer, Professor of Anthropology. 鈥淣ot only does her research extend from South Africa to Kentucky, but she has a wealth of experience working alongside community organizations, city governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). We are excited to welcome Dr. Storey as the first Cultural Anthropologist contributing to the Anthropology Speaker Series.鈥
